Mycena fragillima Smith Cap 1.5-3.5cm across, broadly bell-shaped becoming flatter, with the margin appressed against the stem at first, then often flaring in maturity; dark watery gray becoming paler and brownish; surface has a faint bloom becoming polished; moist and striate. Gills adnate, close in large caps, subdistant to distant in smaller ones, narrow; pale gray with whitish edges. Stem 50-150 x 1.5-2mm, very variable, fragile; pale gray or fawn with downy hairs at first, becoming polished; base covered with stiff, white hairs and sometimes slightly enlarged. Flesh thin and very fragile; pale gray or fawn to white. Odor not distinctive. Taste not distinctive. Spores subovoid, amyloid, 7-10 x 4-5µ. Deposit white. Habitat gregarious around clumps of ferns or fern debris. Found widely distributed in western North America. Season November January. Edibility not known -avoid.
